On the Existence of Classical Microturbulence

Abstract

A Fourier transform technique is developed by which it is possible to distinguish between microturbulence, macroturbulence, and rotation. The method is applied to photoelectric observations of the Fe I A6065 line in six stars. It is found that microturbulence can be used to give a quantitatively consistent interpretation of the observations. Subject headings: atmospheres, stellar - rotation, stellar - turbulence
