Abstract

Summary The chemical and physical properties of expanded perlite as a growth medium are described. The growth of cress in perlite receiving additions of inorganic fertilisers is described and assessed. Only slightly less growth was made in perlite fortified with plant nutrients than in a good potting soil. The medium is simple to handle and is suitable for the growth of plants in less than optimal conditions.
