While uprating large hydro projects does cost money - often around $200 to $700 per kilowatt - it is usually a wise investment to make. Many industry experts believe that uprating older systems is the most-efficient, cost-effective way to optimize energy production. Mr. Siebensohn discusses deciding whether to uprate, choosing what parts of the system to focus on, and assessing individual component choices. 2 references, 5 figures.
