Abstract

Whereas 2 Kgs 8:16-24 devotes but little attention to the brief, ill-spent reign of J(eh)oram of Judah, the Chronicler (2 Chron 21:1-22:1) makes considerably more of this figure. l In this essay I propose to investigate a third presentation of Joram, i.e. that of Josephus in Antiquitates Judaicae (hereafter Ant. 9.45,95104)2 in comparison with the two Biblical accounts as represented by the following major witnesses: MT (BHS), Codex Vaticanus (hereafter B)3 and the Lucianic (hereafter L) or Antiochene recension4 of LXX as well as Targum Jonathan on the Former Prophets (hereafter TJ)5 and the Targum on Chronicles (hereafter TC).6 1 approach my comparison with the following overarching questions in mind: How did Josephus deal with the divergent treatments of Joram offered by Kings and Chronicles? Which text-form(s) of those two books were available to him
