Abstract

Jeremiah chaps. 26 (LXX 33) and 36 (43) tell of the prophet's two narrow escapes during the earlier years of the reign of King Jehoiakim. The puropose of this essay is to examine the markedly abridged (and juxtaposed) version of the two chapters found in Josephus' Antiquitates Judaicae 10.89-95. More specifically, this study involves a comparison between the Josephan passage and its Biblical source chapters as represented by the following major witnesses : MT (BHS), LXX and Targum Jonathan on the Latter Prophets. Which text-form(s) of Jeremiah 26 and 36 did Josephus utilize in composing Ant. 10.89-95 ? How, why and with what effect did he deal with the source data in this instance ?
