Abstract
The history of the development of unitary heat pumps from the discovery in 1850 of its operating principle to the present is reviewed. In the last 25 years difficulties with the reliability and performance of heat pumps were overcome. It is predicted that in the next 25 years the heat pump will become the dominant confort heating system. (LCL)
