Abstract

This paper discusses literature on the interpretation of traffic signs by road users. It notes that how the object on the road sign is represented influences how well the sign is interpreted. It then describes two studies relating to traffic sign memory, and behavioral manuals designed to teach better sign understanding. It concludes that the educational level of the road user is important in sign recognition, and that the sign ergonomics may be relative. In addition, specific behavioral training programs can improve the ergonomic efficiency of a traffic sign.
