In India, the Central Marine Fisheries Research \nInstitute, succeeded In developing a viable \ntechnology for pearl culture using Pinctadajiicata \nin 1973 and since then research is continuing \nto improve the technology. Further, the successful \ndevelopment of hatchery technology for the \nproduction of pearl oyster spat during 1981 led \nto production of pearl oyster seed overcoming the \nproblem of non-availability of seed from the wild \nfor pearl culture industry
