Abstract
The optimum ship hull of a minimum wave bulbous ship with parallel mid-body is studied. The bulb is represented by a point doublet, and the ship body is expressed by a Michell's source distribution with an even power polynomial. To obtain the wave resistance, the well-known Havelock's formula is used. The method of Lagrangian multipliers is then employed to solve the variational problem with minimum wave resistance and other side conditions about the ship shape. Numerical calculations are carried out for several Froude numbers. Shoulder wave resistance is included in the calculation. The bow shoulder interference is neglected. The shoulder wave resistance due to the optimum bulbous ship is much smaller than not only its bow wave resistance but also either the bow or shoulder wave resistance due to the optimum non-bulbous ship. Plots of optimum ship waterline, bulb size, and minimum wave resistance at different Froude numbers are presented. (Author)
