Abstract
This paper describes the design of roadside beacons used in the Vehicle Information and Communications System (VICS). An outline of the system is provided first. This is followed by a brief description of the transmission capabilities of the beacons, and the types of information which are relayed by them to drivers. The latter includes: a) present location of the driver; b) maps of the driver's immediate vicinity; and c) real time traffic information, such as traffic congestion, parking availability, and speed limits. The basic information selection method used by the system when the amount of information available exceeds the transmitting capacities of the beacons is also described and discussed.
