DESIGN OF NEW URBAN NETWORKS

The previous section reviewed road classification concepts, and it is clear from that discussion that there are several types of road and street, but that they can be grouped into two distinct functional groups: traffic routes (mostly arterial roads), the main function of which is to provide efficient traffic mobility; and streets, which provide access to local (the areas bounded by arterial roads or other barriers), but in a wider sense contribute to the overall function of such areas. This section is concerned with the design of new urban networks. The topics addressed in this section include: network design issues; road network function and design; residential area planning; traffic route (arterial road) networks; street networks; and access managed traffic routes. The section concludes with a suggested framework for the design of new urban networks (A).
