Abstract
The author recalls the development of the new Austrian method, the most important basic principle of which is not to disturb the soil around the cavity and to derive maximum benefit of the initial mechanical characteristics of the terrain. Details are given of the role of shotcrete, that of bolting, the necessity of adapting the support to the real behaviour of the terrain and conditions, ease and speed of installation. Excavations and support characteristics are given together with the recommended techniques, limits of the latter. Examples are presented of tunnels and underground structures built with final application of shotcrete. (TRRL)
