Preliminary design of a charter sailing yacht for whale watching in Canada.

This project is a preliminary design of a charter sailing yacht which will operate on the Saint Laurent in Quebec, Canada. A preliminary design starts from a design brief, with a client. This client wanted to create a charter company to watch nature, animals and particularly mammals of the Saguenay, affluent of the Saint Laurent, on sailing yacht. \nA preliminary design involves: \n· Hull design \n· Rig design \n· Appendages design \n· General arrangements \n· Powering \n· Structural design \n· Weight estimate and Stability \n \nFrom the Canadian rules and regulations for small vessels, the design has been done in order to pass the ISO standards. The whale done 36 (WD‐36) is a sailing \nyacht of 11.15 m length overall with an unusual schooner rigging, bilge keel, built in Plywood, with E‐glass reinforcement. The boat can welcome up to 8 people. \nHowever, she was designed to accommodate a family with a skipper for a day, a week end or a week. During the design process, the decisions were made with regards to the environment, the Diesel/ Electric engine is one of the results. \nThis project was undertaken for two reasons. First of all, a sailing yacht preliminary design goes through the majority of the knowledge gain during the three years of the BEng Yacht & Powercraft Design and enables to concretise this knowledge. Secondly, working with a real customer was a formative experience and prepared the designer for the business world.
