This paper examines contemporary thinking and understanding of the nature of science and science learning and attempts to show how this understanding can help African systems achieve their modem science and technology (S & T) education goals. A brief survey of "traditional" western science is given as a prelude to a discussion of current notions on the nature of science particularly aspects related to the relationship between observation and theory, methods of science and school practical work. In addition to identifying common distortions on the nature of science, many factors that typically influence the quality of science education are discussed particularly in relation to professionally empowering the African science teacher.
