Abstract
Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) New York City Transit's (NYCT) new technology signals program goal is to procure a communications based train control (CBTC) system that will become the standard for NYCT's long-term operational needs. NYCT's goal is to provide: interoperability between lines, mixed mode operations, interoperability between CBTC wayside and onboard equipment procured under separate contract, interface standardization, and multiple sources of supply. The plans of Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), a commuter railroad with a traffic density that rivals that of NYCT, to piggy-back on NYCT's pilot program are also discussed in the article.
