Abstract

This chapter explains the principles of the three basic types of switching: circuit switching, packet-switching and cell switching. It covers the theory of the switching matrix, full and limited availability, switch architectures (‘Time’ Switches and ‘Space’ Switches) and the various types of switch technology: Strowger, crossbar, reed relay and digital switching.
