Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of popular distributed object approaches such as Java RMI, CORBA, and DCOM and presents the basic model underlying each approach followed by example applications with code segments from different domains. An experimental evaluation of these approaches is presented followed by a comparison of the approaches with respect to language and platform dependency, implementation, architecture, additional feature support, and performance. A discussion on the proposed Unified Meta-object Model is presented.
