Abstract

Exclusive bus lanes on urban aterials headed the list of POSSIBILITIES FOR MORE EFFICIENT UTILIZATION OF EXISTING TRANSPORTATION FACILITIES REPORTED IN THIS SURVEY. TWENTY- ONE POSSIBLE TECHNIQUES WERE EVALUATED TO DETERMINE THE ALL- AROUND USEFULNESS AND ACCEPTABILITY OF EACH TECHNIQUE. EVALUATION CRITERIA INCLUDED USER PRICE IMPACTS, IMPLEMENTATION COSTS AND OPERATING COSTS, IMPACT ON DISADVANTAGED, ENVIRONMENTAL AND SAFETY IMPACT, SPEED OR TIME AND VOLUME. WORK SCHEDULING CHANGES, AND HIGHWAY TRAFFIC ENGINEERING SYSTEMS IMPROVEMENTS ALSO RANKED HIGH USING THESE CRITERIA. PAVED RAILROAD RIGHTS-OF-WAY, HIGH CAPACITY BUSES AND ORGANIZED COMMUTER CAR AND BUS POOLS WERE ALSO PROMISING. VOLUME ONE PRESENTS THE RESULTS OF THE SURVEY AND ANALYSES OF THESE 21 ALTERNATIVES AND VOLUME TWO DETAILS THE RESULTS OF CASE STUDY INVESTIGATIONS OF BUSWAY APPLICATIONS.
