Abstract

This paper outlines SMARTspan - a new alternative for precast concrete modular bridges. With the number of deteriorating and aging bridges increasing on our roads, (particularly in rural Australia), there is an increased demand for quick and simple bridge replacement solutions to solve this problem. This has put an increased demand on supplying a flexible range of modular bridge systems. For SMARTspan to be an effective total solution- from ordering the elements through to completion of construction, it must satisfy both supply and construction requirements: To be able to supply elements for a precast concrete modular bridge system efficiently, the suite of components must be rationalised and standardised; To be a fast and efficient construction system, the precast concrete modular bridge requires simple structural connections and the use of common construction techniques.
