Abstract
In recent years, several US states have introduced a variety of initiatives aimed at enhancing safe mobility for seniors. These vary from physical interventions; regulation change; highway engineering modifications; and the harnessing of information technology. However, there is still much debate as to the efficacy of some of these “age-based” initiatives. This paper aims to clarify select issues in the debate by describing concepts, measures and highlighting adopted initiatives of safe mobility for seniors who drive less. Many seniors have grown accustomed to high levels of mobility and negative changes in mobility levels will impact not only the individual concerned but the dynamic relationship between transportation and the functioning of society. This research concludes that safer mobility for seniors who drive less will necessitate continued research, planning and resource allocation in order to smooth the transition from active to former driver while maintaining suitable mobility levels for the aging senior.
