Abstract
SiC whisker-reinforced Si3f4 composites with two different matrix compositions have been fabricated using reaction bonding/hot pressing technique. The microstructural development after nitridation and densification was characterized using x-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. The flexural strength, fracture toughness, and failure mechanisms of the composites were investigated and correlated with microstructural features. The parameters controlling the microstructure development, densification behavior, and mechanical properties of the SiCw/Si3N4 composites were also identified.
