Abstract

A large potential exists for the culture of marine bivalves in the numberous estuaries, backwaters, bays and coastal waters of India. The species resources of clams, edible and pearl oysters, mussels, and gastropods are diverse and rich, with current production coming largely from subsitence fishery of edible species and a more organised fishery of gastropod shells. It is recognized that an increase in production will only be possible through culture.
