Abstract

Solvent extraction of Pa/sup 233/ from irradiated thorium nitrate by methylisobutylketone was studied with prepared mixtures of thorium nitrate (2g) in 8 N HCl and various radioactive tracers (Zr/sup 95/, Nb/sup 95/, Th/sup 234/, U/sup 233/, and Pa/sup Mechanical shaking of 5 ml of solutions with equal amounts of methylisobutylketone separated the phases, and the concentration of radioisotopes was determined by BETA and alpha emissions. Further purification of Pa/sup 233/ was checked by the half life (27.3 days), BETA emission in Al absorption, and by spectroscopy. In Pa/sup 233/ BETA spectra (E/ sub BETA //sub 1/ = 0.15 Mev (37%), E/sub BETA //sub 2/ = 0.257 Mev (58%), and E/sub BETA //sub 3/ = 0.568 Mev (5 %)! the radiochemical purity of Pa/sup 233/ was confirmed.
