Production of pions and kaons with large transverse momenta by 35-, 50-, and 70-GeV protons on Cu and Be nuclei

Abstract
Inclusive differential cross sections in the region of large transverse momenta (1.8--3.1 GeV/c) for the reaction p+A..--> pi../sup plus-or-minus/(K/sup plus-or-minus/)+X have been derived from the measured energy spectra of muons produced by ..pi.. (K) ..--> mu nu.. decays in flight. The measurements were made for 35-, 50-, and 70-GeV protons on Cu and Be targets. The behavior of the differential cross sections as functions of proton energy and target-nucleus mass number A are examined. The results are discussed in terms of scaling in the variables x/sub perpendicular/ and x/sub R/. (AIP)
