Abstract
In the 1960s, the teaching of basic addition moved from an emphasis on rote memorization of facts to teaching for understanding. Children were given counters to model addition problems, and they arrived at sums by counting them. This experience helped them to understand the concept of addition, but some people suspected that counting alone was not an adequate basis for teaching and learning addition facts.
