Abstract

The successful operation of the Cool Water integrated gasification combined-cycle (IGCC) power plant demonstrates that the technology is ready for commercialization. The degree of air pollution abatement possible in an IGCC system indicates that power plants should give it serious consideration to meet the environmental challenges of the future. The economic flexibility and financial risk mitigating potential attributable to the modular nature and phased introduction capability of IGCC power plants indicates that their widespread use for electric power generation from coal could contribute significantly to minimizing the cost of power generation in the future. 6 references, 2 figures, 4 tables.
