Abstract

The effect of fractionated gamma irradiation (3x200 r, 10-day intervals) on the proliferative activity of bone marrow cells in rats has been investigated. Results have shown that each fraction of radiation considerably reduces the proliferative activity of erythroid and myeloid marrow cells, and the preceding fractions do not effect the reduction after each radiation. It was also found that after a single irradiation of 600 r there is no proliferative activity in the bone marrow. Regeneration of the proliferative activity occurs rather quickly, viz. on the third day after each fraction of radiation, but after the third fraction its value is considerably higher than normal. In the same postirradiation period there is still no regeneration after single irradiation with 600 r. The myeloid to erythroid marrow cell ratio showed corresponding correlation with the behavior of the proliferative activity.
