Abstract

The paper describes the design and hydrodynamic performances of a three-hull semisubmersible ship (length 42.50m, displacement 490t) for use as a patrol-boat carrying a helicopter. Seakeeping and wave resistance of a basic design are presented for different sea-states and speeds. A wave resistance program has been developed to optimise the wave drag of floats. The results allow a classification of shapes according to their performances. The best floats are tested in towing tanks and a complete evaluation of seakeeping and drag is scheduled in the next months.
