Abstract
This report presents methodologies currently available for sizing riprap protection measures. The five riprap performance areas identified in this report are: riprap quality, riprap-layer characteristics, hydraulic requirements, site conditions, and river conditions. Localized design considerations include: the protection of approach embankments, spur dikes, scour at bridge piers and abutments, river bends, and grade control structures. Limitations of the methods and their application to conditions observed in Arizona are evaluated and an interim design procedure is recommended. Volume I contains a literature review and Arizona case histories.
