Abstract

Oysters occur all along the Indian coasts in \nbackwaters, bays and estuaries forming subsistence \nfisheries. The meat is consumed locally and \nof late there is growing demand for it in some \nparts of the country. The shell is used in lime \nbased industries. At present oyster culture is not \npractised in the country except for the \nexperimental culture conducted by the CMFRI.
