Net phytoplankton of the Great Bitter Lake in the Suez Canal

Light microscope examination of five plankton hauls in January 1975 revealed the presence of 3 taxa of coccolithophorids, 89 taxa of diatoms, and 61 taxa of dinoflagellates. In addition, 7 genera of the zooplanktonic order Tintinnida were observed. A complete list of the taxa identified, together with original photomicrographs of some interesting species, is presented. Several of these species are commented on and the occurrence of 10 planktonic diatoms of cosmopolitan distribution not previously recorded from this area is established.
