Abstract
Control of seizures may be expected in about 75 per cent of cases if a correct diagnosis is established and the optimum anticonvulsant therapy is selected. Disorders known to lower the seizure threshold are corrected by specific means when possible. An accurate description of the seizure pattern and an electroencephalographic record are obtained, and the optimum anticonvulsant is selected. Dosage is increased until seizures are controlled or toxic effects ensue. Use of more than two (at most, three) anticonvulsant drugs at one time is avoided. The patient is urged to report any unusual symptoms. Blood counts and urinalyses are made when indicated.
