Abstract
Four categories of functional use of vegetation in urban and rural landscapes are described: design (unity, linkage, enframement, emphasis, directional, camouflage and spaces); environmental (air quality, provision of shade and shelter, reduction of noise levels and habitat creation); engineering (soil water and soil erosion control, and soil stabilization); and aesthetic.
