Abstract
An account is given of the different mechanisms that determine how plants utilize water supply from roots to the different organs, viz., leaf area index and transpiration, root system development and water uptake, soil water extraction by plant roots, stomatal control due to water vapour loss, water utilization throughout the growing season, and field water balance determination.
