The objectives and structures of the second edition are the same as those of the first edition (EAPA 2:974) published in 1974. The major issues remain the finitude of our energy resources and the environmental dilemmas posed by production and use of energy. This second edition has an increased emphasis in the following areas: economics as a tool for understanding and determining energy patterns; a better evaluation of the relative environmental and health costs of energy alternatives; solar energy as an imminent resource for heating and cooling; and serious conservation, including an analysis of its effect on our life styles. The 35 readings in this second edition are grouped into 5 subsections: Background and limitations; Fossil fuel energy sources; Nuclear fission as an energy source; Alternative energy sources; and Conservation, life-styles, and energy policy for the future.
