DEIXIS IN DRAMA SCRIPT OF DEATH OF A SALESMAN

Abstract

The objectives of the study are to find out the forms, and clarify the meaning of deixis used in Death of a Salesman drama script. In collecting the data, the writer uses observation and documentation method by selecting the diexis forms which can be found in Death of a Salesman drama script. The sources of data are taken from Death of a Salesman drama script. This research employs the theory of deixis in discourse analysis, and theory of meaning to clarify the reference of deixis. The result of the study shows that, there are five deixis forms found in the data. They are Person deixis that is devided into first person deixis, second person deixis, and third person deixis, Place deixis, Time deixis, Discourse deixis, and Social deixis that is divided into absolute social deixis and relational social deixis. In clarifying the reference of data, the researcher uses theory of meaning. The researcher finds 10 references based on first person deixis, second person deixis, third person deixis, place deixis which refer to proximal distance and distal distance, discourse deixis which refer to preceding portion, time deixis which refer to present time, past time, and future time, and the last reference is based on social relationship.
