Tumor markers for canine skin tumor differentiation

Abstract

Canine skin tumors are common diseases. Tumor classification and diagnosis are currently based on routine histopathological diagnosis. The purpose of this study was to define the tumor markers of important skin tumors by immunohistochemical studies on the distribution of intermediate filamentous proteins; namely vimentin and cytokeratin. Antibody against vimentin was used as a marker for mesenchymal cells whereas antibody against cytokeratin was used for epithelial cells. The specimen included 30 epithelial tumors and 30 mesenchymal tumors. Vimentin was expressed within the tumor cells of the mesenchymal origin with various intensity and amount of positive cells. The expression of cytokeratin was noted in the tumor cells of all epithelial tumors with various intensity of immunoreactivity. These results were correlated with routine histopathological diagnosis (kappa = 1).
