After the introduction of ring net in Kozhikode \ndistrict in 1989, there was a gradual reduction \nof other traditional pelagic gears in this area. At \npresent, ring net is the main gear for the exploitation \nof pelagic resources like oil sardine and mackerel. \nOne of the problems faced by the fishermen \noperating the ring net is the damage of the gear \ncaused by dolphin when it tries to prey up on the \nfish. Now the fishermen have found out an \nindigenous way to save the net from this menace by \nencircling the ring net by another net. This method \nhas been in use by some boats for the last four to \nfive years, and of late it has become very popular.
