Abstract
S>The study of alpha decay and E-capture for Po isotopes from the Bi(p,xn)Po reaction is made difficult because of the complexity of the decay chains involved. For example, the decay of Po/sup 199/ goes as follows: Po/sup 199/ K/7.4 hrs yields Bi/sup 199/ K/ 25 min yields Pb/sup 199/ K/90 min yields Tl/sup 199/ K/7.4 hrs yields Hg/sup 199/ (sta ble). Po/sup 206/ which has a known fraction of alpha decay and of Ecapture alpha /sub 1//( alpha + E) = 5%, was used as a referee standard of comparison. The fraction of Po nuclei undergoing E-capture was determined by chemical separation of the daughter products (Bi, Pb, and Tl) and counting on a 4 pi scintillation counter. On the basis of the latest data, the surface probabilities and reduced widths are calculated for masses 199, cle is not known, it is assumed that L = 0. (TTT)
