Abstract
Many rehabilitation and strengthening systems for the public infrastructure made of concrete and reinforced concrete have been developed, taking the aim at mainly two purposes. One is the rehabilitation or the strengthening in the case of a lack in its structural ability or its serviceability. The other is the seismic strengthening against a huge earthquake which may possibly attack in the near future. A new retrofitting system, CRS (Carbon Fiber Retrofiting System), was developed as a powerful retrofitting system for the rehabilitation and strengthening for concrete infrastructures. The basic guideline for the design and construction of CRS was established in February 1995. Retrofitting effects of this system are theoretically and experimentally confirmed. Still, the improvements for the applications are continued by many public and private organizations. This retrofitting system is applied to the rehabilitations and the strengthenings for a variety of concrete structures and shows superior executions. The applications of this system are not only limited to the basic retrofitting fields by the carbon fiber alone but also extended to new fields by the combination with such retrofitting systems as the steel plate jacket system.
