The major propulsion systems of t h e space s h u t t l e p r e s e n t l y contemplated by NASA are described.T h e i r c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s , f u n c t i o n s , and s t a t u s r e l a t i v e t o t h e c u r r e n t technology are discussed.Selected examples a r e given which a r e r e p r e s e n t a t i v e of t h e problems t o be solved i n t h e developmental e f f o r t r e q u i r e d f o r t h e s h u t t l e t o become a r e a l i t y .
