HIGHWAY CAPACITY AND TRAVEL SPEEDS ON LONG DISTANCES

Abstract

Travel speeds were studied by means of the registration plate method on long stretches of two-lane main roads in southern Finland. The data included a total of 135000 observations of complete registration plates and the travel speeds were computed as a function of the hourly volume. The relationship between with-flow hourly volume and mean travel speed was linear up to 1500 vehicles per hour. With greater demand, stable unstable flow of about 1200 vehicles per hour appeared with the mean travel speed of about 40 km per hour. (TRRL)
