Abstract

This article describes the New Millennium subway cars designed and built for the New York City Transit system. Stainless steel, and heavily computerized for operation and diagnostics, they use 25% less energy. 1,080 are set to enter service by the end of 2001, with options for another 320. The roughly $1.5-billion cost is part of a $12-billion, five-year capital plan for the rail and bus systems. Lists some design details.
