Putting a Sewage Treatment Plant into Operation

Abstract

The careful consideration of operating procedures when designing a sewage treatment plant, the proper selection and training of personnel, and the thorough checking of equipment are found to be of importance in placing a sewage treatment plant in operation. This paper describes experiences with new plants in San Francisco, Calif. An intimate knowledge of the layout and equipment of a plant should be obtained at the outset, and special measures for doing this are described. Adjustment of equipment to allow for deviations from original design values of flow, sewage strength, and other factors should be made as soon as possible. Such initial precautions are frequently justified by savings in cost.
