Abstract
The most common cause of bridge deck deterioration in the North American snow belt is the destructive force of rebar corrosion. The corrosion of the concrete deck reinforcing steel is a consequence of the application of deicing materials that began in the late forties. The purpose of this paper is to reveal an unrecognized alternative material that has performed well for over ten years in bridge decks without developing the spalling that is characteristic of internal rebar corrosion. The alternative material discussed is steel fiber reinforced concrete.
