Abstract
The public transport network in Singapore is essentially served by a mass rapid transit (MRT) system, buses, and taxis. Of 7 million daily trips made in Singapore, 3 million are made on bus transit, 1 million on the MRT, 1 million in taxis, and the remainder are by private transportation. With economic expansion, population growth, the high rate of household formation, and population dispersion, the number of daily trips made is expected to increase. The Land Transit Authority (LTA) strategy is to rely on public transport to make travel more efficient and reduce traffic congestion. This paper provides insight on the use of technology in the various modes of public transport in Singapore including control and communications, fare collection, and travel information systems.
