The paper presents the results of studies on qualitative and quantitative characteristic of herring and sprat feeding in the Southern Baltic. Food amount and composition were established for the two species in relation to the season, fish size, and depth of fishing. The differences noted in particular stages of the study period (1971-1989) were also presented. Daily and annual food rations were determined, as well as stability and differentiation of herring and sprat food.
