Abstract

Standard works on towing all state the importance of towing in step--i.e. of having both the towing vessel and the tow meet the seas simultaneously so that the stresses on the towing gear will be minimized. None of the standard works on seamanship, however, describe how to tow in step. Most coxswains or Captains find the proper towing length by trial and error, which can be a frustrating and dangerous procedure. This article presents a method for determining in advance the length of the towing hawser needed to be able to tow in step.
