Abstract
The investigation is a retrospective study of the effects upon traffic accidents of a reduction in the speed limit by 20 km/h on short stretches of road. The speed limits studied were introduced during 1973-1976 in the national road network. Accident information for 1972-1977 has been used. The accident rate decreased by 11% and the injury rate (number of injured persons per reported accident) decreased by 4%. No differences between the various original speeds (70, 90 and 110 km/h) or between the various lengths of road, where the limits were reduced, have been observed. (Author/TRRL)
