Abstract

The application of microsimulation models to the roundabout intersection form is increasingly common as both an analytical aid and a public information tool. Crucial to the accuracy of any simulation are the microscopic parameters that underlie it. Even small changes to key parameters can dramatically affect forecasted system performance. Unfortunately, even among traditional non-simulation roundabout analysis methods, default values for certain key parameters (most notably critical gap) can vary quite substantially. Therefore, an understanding of the effects of changing these parameters is crucial to successful analysis. This paper examines the effects of varying key roundabout parameters within the SimTraffic and VISSIM microsimulation models by analyzing predicted operations for a hypothetical roundabout under three volume scenarios. For comparison purposes, similar variations are tested using the deterministic software packages HCS and aaSIDRA.
